Beatle History in Prestatyn.

Lido Poster large

On Saturday November the 24th 1962, with support from Jack Ellis and the Autocrats, The Beatles performed a 30 minute set at Prestatyn's Royal Lido ballroom.
The tickets cost six shillings, and The Beatles were paid a fee of £30. Prior to taking the stage the group were given a plate of jam sandwiches by the lido's head chef, Alan Veech

Prestatyn has several links to The Beatles. Their loyal road manager and later head of their own company Apple Neil Aspinall was born there, and their manager Brian Epstein had temporarily lived there as a child during the Second World war.

A close friend of Epstein's, Joe Flannery, was in charge of booking bands for Brians new company N.E.M.S and it was he who booked The Beatles to perform at the Royal Lido.

The Royal Lido, which claimed to be "North Wales' Finest Ballroom" opened in 1960, and featured a maple dance floor. At this time The Beatles were often booked to perform in ballrooms; in later months Brian Epstein ensured they played only in theatres.

A clause in The Beatles' contract stipulated that they should not perform within a 10-mile radius of the ballroom in the 10 weeks prior to the concert.
This concert by the group also saw the performing debut in Wales of their new drummer Ringo Starr who had joined the band on August the 18th.

The Beatles had made their own performing debut in Wales only Four months previously on July 14th at The Regent Dansette a small club situated above Burtons the Tailors in nearby Rhyl.

The Royal Lido became The Nova Centre following a major refurbishment, the ballroom floor was removed and carpeted the stage area was left intact, the same stage that was once performed on by not only The Beatles but Gerry and The Pacemakers, Billy J Kramer, Freddie and The Dreamers, The Rolling Stones and many more Sixties bands.
For our Daytripper Weekender The Nova will be going back to the Sixties and the sounds of the Sixties will once again echo through its walls.

All our concerts and events will be held in the The Beaches Hotel situated only a hundred yards away from The Nova, starting at 12 midday till 2am, a splendid time is gaurenteed for all.
